Does my insurance protect against hurricanes?

Hurricane Florence is on the minds of many people living in Florida and surrounding areas. Along with concerns about getting you and your family to safety, you may also be wondering whether your property is protected under your current insurance policy. Allstate explains how coverage is determined when a home or other property is damaged by a hurricane.

Wind damage

High winds from hurricanes can cause a number of issues on your property. Fortunately, most insurance policies do offer coverage for wind damage (although it’s recommended that you look at your specific policy to verify that this is the case). In the event that your home is damaged by high winds, there will be coverage limitations. Accordingly, if the amount of damage exceeds your policy limits you will be responsible for the remainder. You may also be privy to a higher deductible for hurricane damage when property polices offer coverage. If you live in an area prone to hurricanes, it’s best to sort out insurance issues before a storm happens to make sure wind damage is sufficiently covered.

Flood damage

Flooding, despite its underlying cause, requires a separate policy to provide protection. In this case, you’ll need to purchase supplemental flood insurance to ensure your home is protected in the event of hurricane flooding. Water damage is a different topic, however. For example, a roof damaged by a storm may allow water to leak into your home. Any issues resulting from the leak could potentially be covered by your existing homeowner’s policy. If your insurance claim was denied even though your policy states that coverage is available for a specific peril, you may need to seek legal counsel against your insurance company.
